I thought it read as Fran being the third son, as in he’s a trap. It felt like it was going that direction because the story calls him “子” which is gender neutral.

I’m not sure what the implication of saying ‘san’nan bō’ instead of ‘san’nan’ is. 三男 already means either three sons or third son (as with many things Japanese, you have to work it out by context. In this case it would have to be ‘third son’)
Got curious about it and found the chap on syosetu.com. The text there is different though:
とある貧しい農家の三男坊だったと聞いている。
……うん、『三男坊』なんだ、これが。
I read this as, “Heard (she) was a certain poor farmer’s third son bō. … Yeah, ‘Third son bō’, what is this?”
(I left “bō” alone because I don’t understand it.)
One theory might be that she is a third son’s boy, i.e., the child of one. Two problems with this: first, I would expect a の before 坊, and second, this character normally means ‘boy’ (or Buddhist cleric) on its own. In some combinations it is used for ‘baby’ though. So, maybe ‘third son’s baby’? Still the problem with the missing の, though.
(If you’re wondering why I’m reading in English if I can read it on Syosetu.com, it’s because my written Japanese (especially Kanji) is horribly slow and I can’t enjoy the story. I have the reading level of maybe a first or second grade elementary student. My spoken Japanese is much better.)
