You sure it’s mass that the author wrote. I know it’s been a long time since I attended physics class, but I’m sure that folded or open, the tent’s mass remained the same. Unless you count the air inside, but that’s usually negligible.

Isn’t mass (in physics) constant for each object? It’s been decades but I remember that much. Even if you shrunk the Earth to the size of a marble it would remain the same mass.

Wrong, mass isn’t volume or size. thats misusing the meaning of mass. anywhere you look up mass, it always says the amount of matter of the object and is usually equivalent to its weight. therefore the line should of been “size (or volume) and weight” not “mass and weight” since mass and weight kinda describes the same thing.

Mass does not mean volume or size. Using mass as to mean like matter or object is correct usage of mass, but using the word mass in place of size or volume is completely incorrect. Anyone with a science background or any basic knowledge of physics will know this for a fact. Mass is a measure of how much matter an object has and is irrelevant to the size of the object. Technically speaking, folding up a tent will reduce the volume (size), but it will not change its mass since all the materials of the tent is still there but in a more compact form (basically increasing density but maintaining mass). please stop spreading ignorance.

Think of ‘Mass’ like a doctor does instead of a physicist. A doctor will refer to a mass of tissue, or foreign matter, or whatever. It is not being used there as a unit of measure like in physics but as a noun meaning ‘a collection or body’ of something.

And now that I’m past the general discussion on ‘what does mass mean and when does it mean something not in physics’ let’s discuss this in engineering terms (since that’s what I do for a living.)
What some people are tripping over is the fact that Mile is trying to describe a system with TWO parametric limits. Kulereia is believes that if she doesn’t pay attention to the volume limit and only cares about the mass (not weight, that’s something else) limit, she will run out on volume capacity while carrying very little mass. Conversely, if she paid attention to mass and volume, she would run out on mass capacity long before she ran out of space (volume.)
The parameter derived from these two base parameters is called “density”, and in a two base parameter system, there is usually an ideal value of the derived parameter at which the two base parameters taken together are optimized. If you don’t know engineering but have studied economics, this is similar math to finding where the supply curve and the demand curve cross.

Honestly, I’d rather think there’s a set mana reduction for mass per volume taken up in the storage. So perhaps volume has a different mp usage modifier than for weight? Assuming of course you can somehow calculate weight in a place without gravity or external forces, tho in a standard storage where time does not freeze (unlike that AVERAGE storage), chemical reactions(decomposition) and entropy should still exist, alongside pressure if the condition of items stored is anything to go by…. Hmmm…. Well, I guess we still can’t really figure this out huh… To the next chap!

I hate it when writers make up their own physics. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t bullshit it, the readers aren’t all stupid.
Like that one time in Reign of Hunters, when the author especially explained that a monster fell faster than the protagonist because it weighed more… the comments section was in uproar.

You can mass military forces. No, that does not mean make them carry more weight.
You can call ‘mass’ the amount of matter an object has.
You can get a mass of scar tissue.
You can go to Mass. And no, they don’t talk about physics there.
Mass is a term with multiple meanings depending on the subject. In this case, it probably means mass as a collection of objects, not physics, so it’s not totally wrong, it’s a pass, just an uncommon, close one.

It’s a slight translation error. I think the intent was that if you have to imagine a smaller object (e.g. A folded one) it takes up less of your perceived limit and is easier to picture e.g. Try to imagine carrying around dozens napkins all folded fan ill like origami compared to a box of them all neatly folded. If this is heavier it MUST be more difficult to take. The natives falsely correlate the difficulties with size when it’s really just psychology getting in the way.

I read the comments and wonder if there should be crowd translated stories using methods that make it as easy as editing a word document. Maybe a combo of a few translator services, Google Docs, and a web interface. People reading it can pick the best translations giving points to the submitter or summit their own translation or interpretation. Algorithms can analyze the results to improve the translator engines, the site can then sell that data to fund the site.

I know “naruko” (鳴子【なるこ】) is supposed to be a clapper-type string alarm, but wouldn’t it make some sense to translate it as a “tripwire” instead? (Especially for chapter 106.)
