Mile Chapter 133: Just as we thought…

ED: Lowe

「I, for one, know the market price of pepper, what is the basis for that price?」(Pauline)

Although shopkeeper seemed to be a little stunned by Pauline’s emotionless expression, he judged she was just a little girl and immediately replied.

「There is no original form of chili peppers and it is already crushed to powder so it becomes worthless.
Besides, it’s just too painful, it has no taste or flavor as a pepper.
As the price of bad products, its price must below the original. In fact, my price is already higher than its value.
Well, I bothered you with this request, so I thought that I would like to add a little bonus for you.
Hahaha!」(Shopkeeper)

Pauline staring at the laughing shopkeeper with cold eyes.

「What about the value point of the pungent taste is strong and the amount used is small?」(Pauline)

「Oh, is that such an error, isn’t it just add a little bit varieties?」(Shopkeeper)

「How much are you going to purchase?」(Pauline)

「You guys, you aren’t supposed to have so much money buying them, you probably stole it somewhere or bought it cheaply, right?
Do not complain, give it to me quickly, and let me know the purchase route!」(Shopkeeper)

「Mile, take it back!」(Rena)

「Yes!」(Mile)

「Huh?」(Shopkeeper)

Rena ordered Mile to take it back and Mile quickly stored the wooden basin filled with spices.
And shopkeeper agape with wooden basin which disappeared instantly.

「Okay then, there is no achievement this time」(Rena)

With the 『Red Oath』  say so, the shopkeeper protests in panic.

「Wait! Wait, that’s what I asked for …」(Shopkeeper)

「… we can’t reach an agreement with such a price, and our contract is over without a penalty for each other.
Originally such a contract should have been submitted through the guild」(Pauline)

「Uu…」(Shopkeeper)

A shop owner was refuted by Pauline and panicked.

「No, no, I only have ten gold coins in my hand now! I never thought that it would be possible to get such a large mass.
I can’t have such a large sum of money in the shop all the time. If I do such a thing, I will be attacked by thieves. I have to store it in the commercial guild and it will take a while to take it/money out!
So please come back in the evening. I will prepare the money!」(Shopkeeper)

Complicated stuff.

While thinking so, the 『Red oath』acknowledged it and withdrew.

「… What do you think?」(Mile)

「It’s useless, after all, he didn’t look like he would be willing to pay much more..
At most, he will raise the price a little and also will try to get the information about the source of spices」(Pauline)

Pauline answers Mile’s question while shrugging her shoulders.

「He paid attention to the taste and flavor really like a cook… but, oh well.
Although I was willing to sell cheaper than the market price if he didn’t forcibly ask about the source and fixed that attitude of his.
Our spices’ intensity is certainly amazing, but its flavor, fragrance, usability and so on are limited」(Mile)

「Well, humans will get greedy in front of big money」(Pauline)

Rena’s eyes opened wide while glancing at Pauline who said so to Mile.

「Although I am going to wait till evening, but I feel like we are going to waste our time」(Pauline)

That said Pauline made a tired face.

「Then, in order to make effective use of time, shall we go for hunting somewhere until evening?」(Maevis)

「「「Oh!」」」(Mile + Rena + Pauline)

Everyone agreed to Maevis’ suggestion.

*** Evening ***

The 『Red oath』 came to the luxury cafeteria 『Kalamity』again, the shopkeeper was sitting at the table seat in the shop waiting in.

「Then, let’s continue the negotiations from the morning.
After all, I have not heard the new price yet.
But this time, would you please give out your best offer at the beginning?」(Pauline)

Pauline’s voice was cold. She didn’t think that this shopkeeper is a 『good counterparty』anymore.

「Before that, bring out the spices out. It’s a lot of money, I don’t after you take money to tell me something like『I have sold to another shop』」(Shopkeeper)

Pauline nodded, Mile brought out a wooden tub filled with spices from the item box and put it on the table.
After the shop owner saw it, he smiled and told the girls.

「Well, you must tell me the origin and the purchase route of this.
I’ll pay 11 gold coins for this together with that information」(Shopkeeper)

「「「「Haaaaaa …」」」」(Red Oath)

The four girl raise their voice because of their deep feelings.
Again, it was a waste of time.
When 『Red oath』tried to withdraw, the shopkeeper signaled with his hands with *pan~ pan~* (SFX)

And then, the inner door of the shop opened, from there 5 hunter-like men from around 30 to 40 years old appeared.
The men got in a position with 2 people to close off the entrance and the three people protecting shopkeeper.

「I thought about finishing it peacefully, but it would be no use with that kind of attitude.
Catch ‘em all! 」(Shopkeeper)

「「「「Haaaaaa … …」」」」(Red Oath)

「No, even if you are our client, the girls didn’t do any harm to you.
You want us to catch them just because the deal ends up with failure?
If we do such a thing, we will become criminals …」(Hunter Leader)

Apparently, these men seem to be hired through the guild. They must have been ordinary hunters.

「These girls are the thieves who attacked the wagon!
The thing here is the spices that have been robbed.
Because they brought it here to sell it to me, the buyer, I attempted to buy spices back for 11 gold coins.
But it failed so I decided to capture and hand them over to the guards.
Okay, catch ‘em all!」(Shopkeeper)

Even if the shopkeeper says so, it was just a one-sided accusation, if it turns out to be a mistake, it will be serious.
Especially when the said persons are a group of young girls.
It would be a disgrace and they may lose their hunter qualification.
That’s why they couldn’t afford to be hasty.

「We were hired as the guards, there is no reason to seize the young girls who don’t appear to hurt you, even if they are thieves.
Well, even if they are really bandits, we may get the reward fee but unless they are wanted we will not do anything.
Or we may lose our fame as the『good hunter』…
So, is there any evidence?」(Hunter Leader)

After the shopkeeper heard so, he pointed at a wooden basin placed on the table.

「This is it! they are the spices I ordered from a remote country that was robbed by the bandits!」(Shopkeeper)

The hunter leader heard so, looked toward Mile’s group.

「About what he said, is that true?」(Hunter Leader)

Bun Bun Bun! (SFX)
The 4 girls shaking their heads together.

「In the first place, they are special spices that we got, I don’t think they will be available elsewhere.
Please check with the shops where he ordered.
It may take time to check with the supplier, but if you inquire a neighboring shop or a commercial guild, they will tell you whether there are such shops, whether such product has been on the market or not.
I think that you can tell immediately whether it was used at this store ever before though」(Mile)

After they heard Mile’s words, the hunters turn their eyes to the shopkeeper.

「Then, the supplier of the ingredients is the secret of the shop! How can I speak about it!
What about you guys talking to your suppliers to prove your innocence!」(Shopkeeper)

「Huh? You said that yourself, that supplier is the trade secret, and now you demand us to speak?」(Mile)

Mile replied so with a shocked face. And the hunters have bitter smiles.

「What …」(shopkeeper)

「So, you said that your spices were robbed by bandits.
And yesterday morning, we were told that you had been robbed before you received it, so you have not paid the money for the spices yet.
Well, they aren’t yours, are they? What is the right you to claim them on?」(Mile)

Hunters looked at the shopkeeper who had the mouth opened wide amazed by Mile’s words.

「Besides, have you really ordered so much in the first place? Have you really ordered spices with the quantities like in this wooden container?」(Mile)

「Yes, I have ordered 5 kilograms, exactly that match as you have here!」(Shopkeeper)

The shopkeeper’s reply caused Mile to smirk.

「Well, then that just means they weren’t really yours!」(Mile)

After that Mile took out a big amount of spices in various containers one after the other from the item box and arranged on the table. A big amount of spices in various containers.

「「「「「「Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh!」」」」」」(Hunters + Shopkeeper)

Not only the shop owner but also the hunters gave a surprised scream.

「「「「「「This is storage magic!」」」」」(5 Hunters)

「It has proved that these spices have not been taken from said cart, right?」(Mile)

The hunters nodded with cold sweat thankful that they avoided a big mistake.

in first would be is missing. would be willing to can be subsituted by just would, albeit it will change shopkeeper’s attitude in this sentance then. Not sure about how much Pauline want to be polite/official here. Not sure if ‘route for spices’ is good pharasing ….

…. even cambridge dictionary don;t know word ‘ungentness’ i guess intensity would do.

at this point it struck me that whole narrative about actions should be kept in past for consistency sake … u cannot juggle with past simple and present simple as you please … just decide on one. (which is past simple in most cases, as i think about it, i have not seen a novel narrated only in present simple … only thoughts, future plans etc. should be not in past simple … but its just my opinion on this subject.)

o.O wtf they are not knights. hunters/adventures are just bunch of official thugs that will do everything for money so i do not see a problem about offending little girls …As long its not a crime to be tricked by employer in official guild quest. While going against said employers is for sure against some rules. Sure they can lose face if everybody knew they bullied little girls but still losing hunter qualifications is too far fetched. at most they will lose some creditability/fame.

    • well it would be good if u have read my comment a bit higher … but well when i look at your corrections … em …

Pauline {}->{is} staring at the laughing shopkeeper with cold eyes.

so here is for sure sounds wrong. i have not corrected it as verbal adjective (google translator says that this part of speech is called as such). If you really need to make it into proper sentence it would be :

Pauline replied while she was staring at the laughing shopkeeper with cold eyes.
      ——————
      「Oh, is that {such an error}->{a big extra value/benefit}, isn’t it just add a little bit varieties?」(Shopkeeper)

      Here i would rather use
「Oh, is that such an important trait, isn’t it just add a little bit varieties?」(Shopkeeper)
since main focus is on spieces’ properties.
      ——————–
「… we can’t {such}->{do} negotiation with that price

here i think what i suggested earlier was better.
      ———————
A shop owner who was refuted by Pauline {and}->{got} panicked.
      how about
A shop owner, who was refuted by Pauline, panicked.
i mean if u really want to preserve who in sentence.
      —————————————
he {}->{is} willing to pay with much higher price.
At most, he will raise the price a little and also {tries}->{try/will try} to get the route for spices」(Pauline)

i have corrected it earlier, please look at whole sentence.
      —————————
damn correcting your mistakes is just a waste of time … maybe i have better idea i will write what IS correct about your suggestions.

「Although I {}->{will} wait till evening, but I feel like we are going to waste our time」
      (Pauline)
(which you just copied from my reply)

「Then, in order to {make effective use of}->{effectively spend our} time even a little, shall we go somewhere for hunting until evening?」(Maevis)
here u change one correct sentence into an other correct one while leaving mistake later on …
basically u go drinking not go for drinking. you can only go for A DRINK.

You want us to catch them just because the deal ends {of faliure}->{in failure}?
      seems ok

But it was failed so I decided to capture and {protrude}->{turn them in} to a police officer.
technically correct but police does not exist in this world.

{What about you guys talking to}->{How about you girls/guys/brats tell me about} your suppliers to prove your innocence!」(Shopkeeper)

i am afraid you change a meaning a bit. Because the question is if in raw he want them to talk about their supliers or to talk to them (well result for him will the same while 2nd option leaves less room for lies) so if i had to pick something why not

how about you guys talk your suppliers to prove your innocence!」

Mile takes out one after {the other}->{another} from the item box
oh yea in my correction i missed this the other. Most likely because i just focused on next sentence that was just wrong. That does not change that your have mistakes.

To sum up most of your suggestions have mistakes in them (i do not claim my are perfect but still when i see mistakes i will point them)

  5. Well…
Honestly the shopkeeper does have a point in as it’s not the normal stuff it’ll be hard to use. using the right amount of the right spice is important, just because it’s spicy doesn’t mean it’ll be as useful as the normal stuff he use. The impurities of a spice does provide taste as well and you cannot tell from that test exactly how the spice will affect the taste of food before you experiment with it, just burning your tongue with it once is not enough to know it’ll taste good in food.
So with that in mind, I find it weird he was so into that spice that he tried such a move to obtain it, and the means to procure it…

It would make more sense if he actually got a bit of it first then when he realized it actually worked wonders and came back and pulled this move, rather then “Some girls have a spice I have never seen or used before. I NEED TO GET IT”… Are you not afraid that it’s a questionable substance if you haven’t encountered it before when you have your profession?

    • That echoes my own thoughts. I feel as though the villains have a tendency to be pointlessly evil. Not all of them certainly, but just here and there there is someone who the girls oppose but sort of has a point, and then suddenly they pull a grand vizier and start roasting baby corgis on a spit while using healing magic to keep them alive and we can then see that the girls were definitely in the right all along, even if maybe the evidence hadn’t all been there at first…

I do like a bit of simple good versus evil, but it can feel cheap…

  6. Well i would not expect much from a cafe/restaurant named ‘kalamity’ to begin with …Well to satisfy need of good and lawful face-slapping i have seen authors doing even more to be honest and i am not surprised. For example in good for nothing 7th young lady author has a tendency to annihilate behind scenes all witnesses of earlier MC actions just to allow next bunch of soon to be face-slapped extras to underestimate and taunt MC ….(extras are from same town as said witnesses and ofc have not heard anything about MC even though everyone glorify MC as one in 99999999999999999999 years talent.) So just having pointlessly evil enemies are common happening in novels i would say. And about their stupidity … Have not the research proved that 70% of humans are total idiots ? Now just think about ratio when you do not have compulsory education … I dead to think about it….
