I think that Mile is fairly intelligent by herself.
But to be clever enough to make schemes while still retaining “averageness” that should be Pauline. Poor Mile turning into a muscle-brain while she does have a brain (just wired differently)

And i still find my editing thoroughly lacking since to do proper editing and not changing novel you are editing into your own creation to every sentence editor would need :
1) rough mening (here rough tranlation can be very misleading, lets just look at previous chapter when one innocent phrasal almost made shopkeeper demand having sex with Mile.)
2) attitude of speaker (if sentence is to be formal, informal, joking etc)
In fact often point 2 can be more important than 1. Lets take a look at fragment of other novel. despite topic being … um …. well … you can present it in every even philosophical way …

You would have to be able to understand japanese a little if you want to know the tone of what’s spoken. Or have the translator comment in…brackets or something? It’s hard to notice the subtle differences in tones though, if you don’t know the japanese grammar. It all depends on the translator’s skills.

Don’t give me any of that “he’s not a bad guy” redemption crap. He was knowingly committing a crime. And as a merchant, even if he didn’t think of the consequences of his accusations, he should definitely know the gravity of the monetary side of the crime, which wasn’t small.
Softening his crime has no value, and could only be seen as harming the guild if they let him get away with it.
