Have you ever wound yourself?
Rurouni keshin wound are from swordfighting inflicted by opponent.
When I thrust needle to finger for experiment, it is hard to do so. So for Kaoru to wound her own face. It need courage to resist the pain that the body itself know.
So that wound is already big enough for self inflicted.

Correction, I’m not crazy to say that i experiment hurting my self. what i mean is thrust needle on finger for a drop of blood to observe under microscope.

personally i think the light novel illustration showed the wound much better
here due to the amount of blood shown it looks like a shallow cut
in the lightnovel it shows her cheek stained in blood i wish i could post the picture in general

i take that back on closer look both cheeks are stained in red
its just the light novel is easier to tell
