Mile Chapter 234: Ascham Viscountess 3

After finishing their introduction, four masked girls move to attack immediately.
Imperial soldiers are being knocked down one by one, with sword skill and magic.

And above all, the flow of battle was completely broken.

The Ascham soldiers were confused by the surprise attack and now the Imperial soldiers were confused with four masked girls.
And just like that, the Imperial Soldiers with inferior numbers had no chance of winning.
And all of the Empire’s surprise attack members fell on the ground.
Those who were defeated by the mysterious girls have not suffered any major injuries, but those who were defeated by the Ascham’s soldiers, of course, have been seriously injured or killed.

There wasn’t enough of a difference in power to capture the Imperial soldiers, so, the Ascham’s soldiers can’t afford to do so.
And even if there was such a difference in ability, the soldiers of the local army would have no intention of doing such a thing.
For those burglars, there will be no mercy.

There’s no fool that goes easy on their enemies… normally.

『Oh, you are …』(Junou)

After defeating all the Imperial soldiers, ordering his subordinates to take care of his allies’ injuries and capture the uninjured enemy soldiers, Junou, the commander asked the girls who helped him.
The self-proclaimed “Resurrection Knight”, who is also the oldest among the girls casually replied.

『We are the mercenary group 《Red blood is justice》
We received a request from a person who has been in the care of the people of the Ascham territory.
And we came from another country to help』(Maevis)

『Thank you, it must be hard…』(Junou)

To think there are people, who didn’t forget the gratitude they received and wanted to pay it back at all costs.
In response to the request, these girls come to help in a battle with no chance of winning.
Junou thanks both that person and these girls in front of him in his heart.
Even if those names are somewhat, no, it’s beautiful…

And then Junou watched the other members who he hadn’t seen clearly before.
Everyone is still young, there are also girls who seem to be minors obviously…

Junou’s body froze.
Silver hair shining brightly.
Although her eyes are hidden by the mask, those eyes look nice for a person, and those eyes somehow give him the nostalgic impression.
That figure as it was when he first met…
Unexpected words leaked out of Junou’s mouth.

『Lady… Mebel…』(Junou)

(Eh, my esteemed mother’s name…?
This person, perhaps he is a commander of a military force, right?
Commander of our military, certainly…) (Mile)

Mile wasn’t good at memorizing the people’s faces.
However, her memory of other things was out of the ordinary.
So she didn’t remember Junou’s face which she saw only a few times years ago,
but as Junou’s name was repeatedly mentioned in the conversation with her grandfather and mother, 《Commander of our territory army, Junou》
She also remembered the word her esteemed mother told Junou, the orphan her esteemed grandfather chose when her esteemed mother was still twelve years old 《Junou, become strong, protect us and our citizens》firmly.

Mile remembered her conversation with her esteemed mother and grandfather gently smiled and muttered so.
That word that her esteemed mother said when she first met this man.

『Junou, protect Ascham…』(Mile)

Mile Vol 8-7

(T.N: The left side is Adel’s mother, Mebel)

And then the four girls of the 《Red Oath》 disappeared, leaving behind a ragged and tearful man.

Was it a sorrow shrieking or was it the roar of rejoicing?
A scream sounded in the forest where the Ascham demesne army was currently camping.
And on that day, the soldiers of the territory army will know the meaning…
of someone who became a demon while still alive.

『Mile, was that man your acquaintance?』(Rena)

『Yes, I only know his name though, but I think he is probably the commander of our land army』(Mile)

Rena surprisedly asked and Mile casually answered.

『Then, what was that cry just after we left the scene?』(Rena)

『Ah, that person first met with my mother, it seems that my mother’s figure was about the same as my figure at the moment.
He seemed to mistake me for my mother or something because I said the word my mother said at that time, so maybe he remembered my mother…』(Mile)

『『『Devil!!』』』(Rena’s Trio)

『Damn, what are the surprise attack units doing?』(Enemy Commander)

The commander of the Empire’s invading army shouted out loud in frustration.

『Maybe they took a lot of time to find the enemy’s hiding place…?』(Enemy Staff)

Even if they fail their surprise attack, not everyone will be killed.
The selected soldiers will judge the situation and at least a few of them will escape when they fail in their mission.

Whether they succeeded or failed, a certain number of people would return and report the situation.
They didn’t return yet, which means, They still hadn’t fought the enemies… Normally.

『For now, I will wait for a few days…』(Enemy Commander)

The commander agreed with his staff with a frustrated face.

And then a soldier came running in there.

『Message! Supply troops that were scheduled to arrive tonight have been attacked. Damage of personnel is minor, goods are all destroyed!』(Enemy Soldier)

『What!?』(Enemy Commander)

Loss of supplies on the battlefield.
That was a big problem … for the low-rank soldiers.
For the high-ranker, it is not a big deal.
No matter how much supplies are lacking, what they eat and drink isn’t reduced, and in the main battle with swords and spears, their ammunition is also small.
At best, it would only affect the high-ranker with the degree of saving a few arrows.

That’s not a big problem because they have an overwhelming force difference.

In the first place, the supply unit accompanying the main soldiers from the beginning carried enough supplies to survive until the next supply unit arrived.
Even if they lost one supply unit, they could steal from the occupied area or have their soldiers patiently use fewer supplies until the next supply unit comes.

So why did the commander raise his voice?

『 Did the enemy army go behind us?
Or was it a raid by people in the occupied territory?』(Enemy Commander)

Yes, it was a question of battle-related matter.

『It maybe either of them…
However, they didn’t attack our army from the back.
Perhaps they were in need of food and tried plundering our goods at risk.
If it is the work of the soldiers of the Ascham territory, it means that the enemies have left the main town.
And, despite being able to attack from the back of our army, they gave priority to robbing supply units without hitting combat units from behind.
However, our morale over there is at the lowest now!
We should have soldiers wait for the arrival of the next supply troops, and  escort them to invade across the territory because the main town has fewer soldiers now…』(Enemy Staff)

『Hmm, I get it, we will do so…』(Enemy Commander)

The commander agreed with his staff’s suggestion and lighten the mood.

Actually, for the common sense of this world, the staff and the commander aren’t stupid. But not for Mile’s common sense.

In this world, the importance of logistics in the war wasn’t well recognized like the Modern Earth.
Even in World War II, there were a lot of people who said that invaders can secure the supplies from the local.
They also planned a strategy that used it as an attitude from the beginning.

Even at the time of the Russia-Japanese War, people still made a fool of supply troops with a fun song such as 《If  the (輜重兵)Supply Corp is counted as soldiers, even butterflies and dragonflies will become birds…》Even during World War II, they still didn’t recognize as general soldiers.

(T.N: If Anyone knows history, please confirm it for me, I won’t read the great wall of text about WWII to confirm this)

In this world, where there are many commanders who have never thought about the food situation of the lower level soldier, there were few necessities of maintenance of weapons and supply of ammunition or paying attention to supply.
Besides, because they still had some amount of goods stored, there was no problem with the delay in supply.

And a few days later.

No-one from the surprise attack troops returned, they were already considered as MIA or KIA.

And when the commander was irritated, the report arrived.

『Message! supply troops were attacked! All of our food has been destroyed!』(Enemy Soldier)

『Again!?』(Enemy Commander)

The commander shouted.

At first, they brought a lot of food and there weren’t so many arrows and medicines consumed in battle.
So, even if their supplies were delayed a little, there was still room for the military’s actions.
However, if they planned to invade the Ascham territory from now on, the replenishment will become more difficult than before.
And most importantly, luxury goods such as wine, high-grade foods and fresh produce for the high-ranked are running out.

『What were the escorts doing?
Take some soldiers from here and catch those raiders immediately…』(Enemy Commander)

The supply camps of the 2nd battalion and the 3rd battalion has been lost!
Almost half of the supplies were lost at the base camp of the 4th battalion and the 5th battalion!』(Enemy Soldier)

『… …』(Enemy Commander)

The supplies on the camping site isn’t a transportation unit, but a part of the army camp that they have set.
And the loss of the supply camp means that all supplies of the battalion, from food and drinking water, are now gone.
And right now, the commander realizes that this is a big trouble.

『Lead me to the scene!』(Enemy Commander)

A battalion consisting of about 1000 people. This invasion army organized in 5 battalions, a somewhat large invasion army as a regiment.
The goods they brought are distributed to each battalion and kept by each battalion.
The fact that they were attacked by enemies without being found out by any guards means that enemies can attack the Imperial army at anywhere and anytime.
Whether it is the headquarter or a normal basecamp…

Thinking so, the commander headed to the battalion and he saw a scene that he didn’t expect.

『Th-This is……』(Enemy Commander)

The commander thought that he would see the destroyed supply tent and the debris of the fire burned out all the goods.
However, there is a flock of accumulated tents arranged beautifully as if nothing had happened before his eyes.
… However, there was nothing left. It’s just a flock of empty tents.

  1. I’m not sure about Japan but from what I remember the US merchant marines were considered civilians but all the ships did have Navy officers and Navy armed guards on them making the distinction a bit fuzzy.

Still in WW2 the USA and England took supply lines very serious. Again not sure about Japan.

    • There’s probably a distinction between officers who oversee the war and the general front line soldiers who are probably dismissive of anyone not fighting at the front. The author probably just blurred the generalization of supply line vs supply line transporters. Even if you think the supply line is important, you probably still wouldn’t feel that the transporters are real soldiers.

    • By WWII, behind-the-frontline attacks were the norm, so importance of logistics was understood well enough. But Russo-Japanese war was at least 30 years earlier.

    • Merchant Marine ships only had Navy personnel on them if they had anti-aircraft or anti-sub armaments. When it came to logistics units that were actually part of the US Armed Forces, they were not only considered military, they all had to have rifle training. Even the construction personnel were included (and feared. Read up on the SeaBees sometime.)
In fact, one of the very last full bayonet charges conducted by the US military was done by a couple hundred members of a Navy Logistics unit, not an Army or Marine unit (I believe it was while trying to stop the Japanese either in Guam or the Philippines. If I could remember exactly when/where it happened, I could probably find a URL to stick here.)
In contrast, Japan didn’t hand out military gear and pay to anyone except fighting units. A lot of the non-fighting units weren’t even Japanese; they were Korean conscripts.

The US and the Brittish Commonwealth appreciated and had a well oiled supply chain, though the US army was a step above everyone else.
The Germans weren’t ignorant of it, but underestimated the difficulty of transportation over the vast distances of Russia in the harsh winter and the subsequent mud caused by spring melt off without proper paved roads and railroads. They mistakenly thought they could finish the war quickly enough not to have Napoleons issues. Napoleon lost in Spain and Russia precisely because he neglected logistics which had allowed him to move his armys quickly when he could procure what he needed locally, but cost him when the local population denied him access to local supplies.
The Japanese were considered to have the best light infantry in the world, able to force march great distances in part because they didn’t carry the same logistical tail of other armies. Which only worked well when they could confiscate what they lacked locally.

Mile is a spitting image of her mother.

By the loli gods !! how could that ingrate usurper even think of murdering her and her father.

    Thanks for the provisions.

Well maybe Mile’s father prefer tits over loli’s

    • well. supplies doesn’t just mean food. it also means weapon and armor. Pauline will most probably sell them. but i think Mile would also try to do something like giving the supplies to her country’s army(and Pauline would rage for sure).

  6. Only Japan was that stupid during WWII. They were known for having such a lack of proper food supplies that they turned to cannibalism.. not frequently or commonly. It’s just outright know that if you were a Japanese soldier you were a cannibal because your food was that scarce.

  7. Thanks 4 the chapter!

“And just like that, the Imperial Soldier side with an inferior number of people has no chance of winning.”
Didn’t the imperial soldiers have superior numbers?

Also, it must be creepy to find an empty camp like that.

  9. Thanks for the chapter.

The supplies are probably all in Mile’s storage and Pauline has a perpetual “dark” smile.

  10. The spiriting away technique. Fun thing about wars, Moral matters, and the amount of food and supplies helps to boost moral. Was Adel’s mother average, because Adel’s figure and face were made average, aka pleasing to most people.

  11. Just passed by and stored all enemy’s supplies in Mile’s Item box, what an “average” tactic ever!

And now with those army size supplies, they don’t need to buy food and other equipment anymore for decades!

    Pauline’s face might look like this now –> ( $_$)/ or (〃^∇^)ノ♪

  12. I don’t know about the song. I do know that during WWII the Japanese had a much lesser view of Logistics than did the US. In fact while base sites were chosen by combat officers and were usually in a good positions, they were often poorly laid out (such as with runways not set up to make best use of prevailing winds, or buildings blocking sight lines,) and poorly maintained.

Decisions were also sometimes made based on prestige, not combat considerations. For example to a non-officer having a bayonet was seen as prestigious (with conotations from samurai days,) so crew served machine guns, with their higher prestige, were given bayonets to mount on the machine guns before and instead of regular foot soldiers who might conceivably use them for their rifles.

  14. Unlimited dimensional storage is a dream come true for allies… and nightmare for enemies. Welp, when these thugs’ morale hit rock bottom, why not use some flashy beam magicks to disperse them :p
    Thanks for the chapter.

  15. In world war 2 supply line were taken really seriously in the west, one of the USA doctrine was to produce tank quicker than the enemy could destroy them, so supply line were extremely important.

but even in ancient times the importance of supply line was well known The sorched earth strategy that consist of depriving the enemy of supply and make them starve is maybe as old as war itself, Romans called that strategy the fabian strategy, because it was first used in roman history by Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus against Hannibal during the second punic war, And was still used regulary in history notably in
    – the Gallic wars
    – the Hundred year’s war
    -the Amearican Revolution
    – the napolenic war (the defense of russia)
    -The first indochina war

“A scream sounded in the forest {} > {where} the Ascham territory army was {current} > {currently} camping.”

“The invading army commander of the Empire {frustrated and shouted out loud} > {shouted out loud in frustration}.” – The first implies the commander was frustrating something else as opposed to being frustrated himself.

“{If they} > {They} didn’t return yet, which means, {they still didn’t fight with the enemies yet} > {They still hadn’t fought the enemies}… Normally.” – There is no question about whether the surprise attack units have returned, so no ‘if.’ Saying they ‘still’ hadn’t done something ‘yet’ is redundant, though this sentence would be fine structurally if one of those were just cut out.

    “{There was no-one} > {No-one} from the surprise attack troops {return} > {returned},”

“So, even if their supplies were delayed a little {stuck} > {}, there was still room for the military’s actions.” – I’m not sure what ‘stuck’ was supposed to mean in this sentence.

“The {supplies camp} > {supply camps} of the 2nd battalion and the 3rd battalion has been lost!” – two supply camps.

Instead of ‘Ascham territory army,’ interchanging with ‘Ascham demesne army’ would fit the setting better. . . That said there are a lot of instances of this, so it’s probably not worth going back to do. Of course, if one were to do so, varying them by making them possessive or dropping the descriptor where what kind of army it is has been already established recently (same or prior sentence) would make it feel more alive.

So many steamed people. . .

  18. I think the author is misconstruing something military leaders of the past where well aware of the logistics of war the thing is that any kind of long march away from a safe resupply point such as a city or harbor became more and more unusable the farther they went from it. Its not like today where we can use a radio and an air plane to drop supplies within a day or even hours. A force of 5000 men would need a huge amount of food that would be hard to constantly supply just garrisoned let alone out in the field without foraging to supplement. Especially if it takes many days to reach them. Its not even a certainty that the army itself would be where the supply chain might expect them since they might need to move so just finding them could become a headache.

    • Well, FUNA-sensei might talk about Japanese Military in the past.

From what I heard from the Westerner Readers in my site, Westerner Soldiers seem to have high level Handiness and Logistic.
