It’s surprisingly rare to see a protag do something low level/scummish as forgery. I mean, we have many other protags trying to buy their entry via showing off their level of OP’ness, or having gotten solid recommendations from notable people, or just plain manipulating their way in via blackmail/bribery.
I’m hoping that though he may be a Fool, he would be a clever one who won’t hesitate to using somewhat underhanded means if absolutely necessary.
Story-wise, basically writing off a town like Falltown seems to be a result of regression; maybe the Kingdom couldn’t afford to continue aiding such a frontier settlement, especially once it started to get overrun. It wouldn’t be the first time a novel takes such a route (MC is from town that’s supposedly lost to time/informaion lockdown), but it’s pretty rare.
