Well, as for getting rid of the fireball, logic and understanding of what properties maintain it and nullifying one of them covers all the methods of dispelling it. For instance, if the caster is the one maintaining the spell by constant magic input, incapacitating them would be enough. However, since the flame was also being controlled by another spell, control of the flame would have been lost, likely damaging the nearby vicinity.
So the test was more along the line of seeing if one was able to properly evaluate the aspects of a spell and craft a multilayered solution to counter the spell; a common example of intermediate problem solving. Kind of like the difference of being taught long division and told to solve an equation that requires dividing as only part of it. Theory versus practice.
Though, there should be more test questions for proper evaluation. Two more conundrums of similar difficulty but differing methodologies would provide enough feedback to judge the depth of grasp the prospective student has.
