I suspect “sad and upbeat” might not be the right translation here.
Upbeat (in this context) would mean ‘cheerful’ or ‘optimistic’, which in a general sense implies ‘happy’, opposing the earlier ‘sad’.
Without knowing the original japanese I’m only guessing, but the surrounding wording implies that both emotions are felt simultaneously and equally by the two girls. As such they should probably be complementary emotions, rather than opposing ones.

It’s good that Maevis has a nanomachine arm instead of one that was truly made with magic. Otherwise, if she ever walked into an anti-magic area or had Dispel Magic cast on her, that magic arm would decompose and need to be re-created again assuming she survived the battle unbalanced from a missing arm.
